Eatonville was incorporated on August 15, 1887, it was one of the first self-governing all-black municipalities in the United States. First, it was Maitland. We were sharecroppers, who worked in the field-in Maitland ( our working space ). Both Captain Josiah Eaton, Lewis Lawerence with the insight from Joe Clark founded and acquired 112 acres, forming what we know now to be Eatonville.
Maitland-home of Lake Lily Park, Florida which is formerly known as St. John's hole. St. John's hole, was where the freed Blacks residents resided before Eatonville was established. This location was also, a military supply route between Fort Mellon; now known as Sanford, and Fort Gatlin, which is now known as Orlando.
If you ask yourself, why Lake Lily...this is our why-this is our HISTORY.
